![]() ![]() ![]() Understanding the Intelligence Cycle (Abingdon, Routledge, 2013, editor) Mark is currently working on two projects one involves a study of British state surveillance of Communists and suspected Communists in the period from approximately 1918-1954, and the other is focused on developing a political theory of national security intelligence. In 2020 he received the ISA Intelligence Studies Section Distinguished Scholar Award, making him only the 10th recipient of the award since it was first made in 2000. In 2012 he was made a Fellow (at the time ‘Academician’) of the UK Academy of Social Sciences in recognition of his work in developing social science approaches to the study of intelligence. He is the lead editor of the journal Intelligence and National Security, one of the editors of the Georgetown University Press book series, Georgetown Studies in the History of Intelligence, and an editorial board member of several academic journals. Recent books include: Principled Spying: The Ethics of Secret Intelligence, co-authored with Sir David Omand (Oxford University Press/Georgetown University Press, 2018) - a finalist for the Association of Former Intelligence Officers "Best Intelligence History of 2018” book award a 3rd edition of Intelligence in an Insecure World, co-authored with Peter Gill (Polity Press, 2018) Ideologies of American Foreign Policy, co-authored with John Callaghan & Brendon O’Connor (Routledge 2019) and The Iraq War and Democratic Governance: Britain and Australia Go to War, co-authored with Judith Betts (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020), which was included in a 2020 listing of the ‘ 100 Best Australian History and Politics Books’. ![]() In 2018 the Financial Times described him as “among the sharpest of security scholars”. Professor Mark Phythian is the author or editor of some fifteen books on intelligence and security topics, as well as numerous journal articles and book chapters. ![]()
